Sealants are primarily used to block openings from surfaces that need to be sealed. This is a convenient and easy-to-use alternative sealing property, especially for materials that can't be blocked by concrete. Sealant's primary functions are to fill the gap between solid components, protective sealing effectively, and the long-lasting firm holds properties.

However, there are different types of Sealants with other applications and functions. The most common sealants used in construction are Latex, Acrylic, Butyl, Polysulfide, Silicone, Polyisobutylene, and Polyurethane.

Polyurethane Sealants are known for their flexibility and versatility when it comes to construction. They could be applied to surfaces like plastics, wood, metal, masonry, aluminum, and more. If you're using this type of Sealant, you won't have to worry about water leaking or any gaps as they are durable enough to withstand any weather condition and ideal for sealing joints and structures.

How to Apply Sealant

Applying Sealant to concrete expansion joints should be a breeze, but here are some step-by-step guidelines, so you'll know exactly what to do and the procedure for an efficient application.

Step 1. Ensure that the expansion joints are clean and free from any unnecessary pebbles, dirt, or debris before proceeding to the application procedure. Scrub them if necessary.

Step 2. Make sure to keep them all dry before applying the Sealant.

Step 3. Get your Sikaflex Polyurethane Sealant, cut the tip-off to open the tube. Use any type of sharp object or preferably a utility knife.

Step 4. Measure the width of the joint you are trying to seal and match your cut's width in the opening.

Step 5. Insert the already opened sealant tube into your Caulk Gun for a smooth and comfortable trigger.

Step 6. Gently apply the Sealant using the Caulk Gun to the expansion joints area you wish to seal. Make sure to carefully apply them and immediately remove any excess before it dries out.

How Long Do Sealants Last

The primary purpose of sealants is to serve as protective sealing in between joints or broken concrete surfaces. They are also durable enough to withstand any environment. The most common question about them is how long does it last? Let's find out.

The average expected lifespan of a polyurethane sealant should be about 5-10 years, depending on how exposed it is to temperature changes and how much sunlight it gets, as this could directly affect its functionality.
